Humanities May Reclaim Importance in the AI Era, Says Netflix Chairman Reed Hastings

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries and job markets, Reed Hastings, chairman of Netflix, believes the impact will soon extend to education. Speaking on the Possible podcast, Hastings suggested that universities may gradually shift focus away from a STEM-heavy approach toward a stronger emphasis on the humanities.

Hastings, who studied Mathematics at Bowdoin College and later pursued computer science and AI at Stanford University, noted that STEM fields have long dominated institutions like Stanford. However, he now sees a potential “rotation” back to disciplines such as history and literature—areas that build critical thinking and human understanding.

He emphasized the growing importance of emotional intelligence in an AI-driven world, adding that if he were raising a child today, he would prioritize emotional and interpersonal skills alongside academics.

His remarks come amid widespread layoffs across major tech firms, including Meta, Snap, Oracle, and Microsoft, as companies streamline operations using AI. Industry data also points to a decline in mid-level tech job opportunities, reflecting a shifting employment landscape.

While some experts, such as Boris Cherny, have suggested that traditional software engineering roles could diminish due to AI-powered coding tools, Hastings remains cautious about such predictions. He believes that although certain roles may shrink, new opportunities in software and related fields will continue to emerge.

Reinforcing his vision, Hastings donated $50 million to Bowdoin College in 2024 to launch the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity, aimed at exploring AI’s societal impact and strengthening interdisciplinary research.

Despite rapid changes, Hastings remains optimistic. He views the next two decades as a transformative period, with AI driving innovation, productivity, and new opportunities—while also renewing the relevance of human-centered disciplines.
