New tech spur IT hiring

Hiring firms report a 50% increase in job listings from January to February, with a focus on specialized skills rather than entry-level positions.
With the rise of new technologies like AI, machine learning, and a revival in BFSI and retail sectors, the demand for IT professionals seem to be gaining momentum. According to hiring firms, a sharp uptick in job listings is visible through February, reflecting a 50% surge compared to January. However, the demand is largely for specialised skills rather than entry-level roles.
Industry analysts attribute this rise to positive sentiments around increased IT spending by US firms under President Donald Trump’s administration, along with a growing push for faster technology adoption.
“IT hiring has surged significantly since January, driven by the need for specialised talent. In some niche areas, demand has nearly doubled, reflecting a shift in how companies are strengthening their technical capacities,” said Varun Sachdeva, senior vice-president and APAC head at staffing firm NLB Services, which recruits for top IT firms.
Even as uncertainties persist regarding US visa policies, the domestic job market is seeing some uptick as companies increasingly move towards digital transformation, necessitating IT expertise. Global clients are also accelerating project timelines, prompting domestic IT firms to expand their workforce.
Krishna Vij, vice president of TeamLease Digital, said that potential shifts in US immigration policies could further influence offshore hiring. “If the US tightens visa norms, it may lead to increased hiring in India and other offshore locations, ultimately benefiting the domestic IT job market,” he said.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), had highlighted early signs of recovery in client spending, particularly in BFSI and retail, during its December quarter earnings. CEO K Krithivasan expressed confidence in faster deal closures in the coming months.
Infosys CEO and MD Salil Parekh had also stated about the company’s commitment to enhancing enterprise AI capabilities, particularly generative AI, which is seeing strong client traction.
Companies are actively seeking artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) experts to drive automation, data analysts for business intelligence, and cybersecurity specialists to address escalating cyber threats. Blockchain experts, too, are witnessing high demand, often juggling multiple job offers, staffing executives said.
The six largest IT firms currently operate at utilisation levels in the mid-80% range. Any continued surge in global demand — particularly from the US — will likely drive further hiring momentum.
“The competition for skilled talent, especially in AI, data science, and cybersecurity, is pushing up pay packages across levels,” said Sachdeva. “Companies are also reworking their talent strategies to attract and retain these high-value professionals,” he said.
According to data from NLB Services, 40% of the demand is for mid-level professionals, 20% for senior roles, and the remaining 40% for fresh talent, including entry-level positions.
